  • Updating Content Management Systems

    January 20th, 2011

Yesterday i made an Backup and Update Day.
I’m using 2 different Content Management Systems (CMS) for my Webprojects, [[Wordpress]] and [[Joomla]]. And the Way to Update them is very different.

WordPress made an awesome Development in the last Years, it is really easy to use and to Maintain. It can update itself (and the Plugins and Themes) with a Click on a Button. That is very impressive for a CMS.

To Update Joomla on the other Hand, you need to use a FTP Programm to upload the new Files to the Webspace. That gives the Admin more Control but it is also more Work.

Two Different Approaches to Updating. I would say that the WordPress Solution is more practical and way easier to use. Find the Time to Download the new Joomla Files and upload them to your Webspace isn’t always easy and so it is more likely to miss Updates.

  • Happy New Year (and a Countdown Script)

    January 2nd, 2011

    First of all :

    HAPPY NEW YEAR

    Everyone.

    Second:

I wrote a PHP Countdown Script for my Computer to run during our Party.

The Script is really simple. It is a Simple Website that reloads itself every second and it changes the CSS Style depending on how much Time is left. I thought it is useful and it can be easily adjusted to different Dates and Styles.

    Here are some Screenshots:

and here is an Archive with the Script.

  • Google can’t find Google

    December 21st, 2010

While browsing i stumbled over this funny Thing:

  • You just have to love Linux

    December 11th, 2010

I’m using Linux, Ubuntu to be precise, for some years now. I don’t run into Problems very often but when it happens Linux always surprises me with its simple Solutions, if you know the Solution but we will come to that later.

What happened: My Wifi didn’t work out of the sudden, i couldn’t turn it on with the Button on the side of the Laptop or via Software. I tried to click my Way trough all Menus in Linux, it didn’t work. I booted Windows (yes it is still on my Laptop and i boot it once a year or so 😉 ). I clicked my Way to the Menus there with the same Result: No Working Wifi.

Now comes the awesome Linux Community in handy. And the one Truth i learned about Computers in the recent years: You are NEVER the first one who has the Problem, just google your Problem. Said and Done. In a Ubuntu Forum i found the Solutions: 2 simple Terminal Commands and everything worked again.

The Wifi was blocked by some Command (i suspect the Suspend Mode messing with it). With “rfkill list” you can see if the Module is blocked and with “rfkill unblock all” you can unlock it. Done

    Thank you Ubuntu Community

  • Wikileaks and the Test for the Internet

    December 6th, 2010

[[Wikileaks]] is all over the News these Days. The Internet Platform is publishing Documents from the US State Department, only a Minority of these Documents is classified as secret, as far as i know.  The Documents contain Notes over Politicians other Countries, that the US State Department collected over the last years. The Documents are not stolen from  Wikileaks, Wikileaks is just the Platform who is publishing those Documents.
As a Reaction to the Publishing of those Documents, Wikileaks faces massive Attacks: [[DDOS]] Attacks, Closing their Servers in the US and France, closing Wikileaks Paypal Account.

Now we are seeing the Stress Test if the Internet as a Infrastructure is so free as we hope and Hackers (in the non criminal Meaning) want to believe. People are setting up Mirror Websites to support Wikileaks while it is under Attack. If this will be successful, the Content from Wikileaks will survive the Attacks and will still be available, even when Governments close the Wikileaks Website in their Country.

The [[Twitter]] Search for #imwikileaks is showing a huge Support via Twitter, but posting 140 Signs is easy, to keeping the Content public and available is way more difficult.

The Question is : Can Wikileaks stay available and open to prove that the Internet is as free as we hope or will the Internet become a more controlled Place. I hope the Internet will stay open, free and crazy as it is but i fear that Governments all over the World will use Wikileaks as a Reason to install more Control, more Restrictions for their Citizens using the Internet.

In 2 Weeks something else  will be in the News but Wikileaks will still be haunted. We will se what will happen

    UPDATE:

The, as always awesome, [[Wired Magazine]] has a good Article why Wikileaks is helping the US and not harming the US.

    UPDATE 2:

The German [[Chaos Computer Club]] has published a Statement (in german) about Freedom of Information, Wikileaks and the Western Governments . Good Reading (if you can read German)

  • Google Services

    November 17th, 2010

In the last Couple of Days i tried out some [[Google]] Services, besides my Standard E Mail Service GMail.

And i have to say. Google is doing their Homework with their Stuff. I switched from [[Firefox]] to [[Chrome]]. It feels faster for me and just more comfortable. I don’t even miss my Firefox Extensions.

Today i read the [[Wired]] Article about Google Voice as an [[Iphone]] App. I never tried Google Voice until today but i’m really impressed. In 5 Minutes i configured the Account with my own Telephone Number and Forwarding for Calls to my Home Phone.  Easy as Pie.

I love Things that Just work and Google is doing some Services that just work.

Yes there are those Concerns that Google gets to much Information about Me. I’m aware of the Trade Information for Services but for now i have an Advantage without seeing a Disadvantage for me.  That may Change but for now it just works.

BTW: there Should be a Widget in the Contact Section to Call/Text me.

  • Secure your WordPress Website

    November 12th, 2010

From my own experience, i know how important it is to backup and secure your Website to protect it against Attacks. I once spend a Weekend and the following Workweek in restoring a Website from an Attack only to see it attacked again. I had to move the hole Site to a new Webhoster.

I found some useful Tips how to secure your [[Wordpress]] Installation on this Blogpost.

It doesn’t take long to make your WordPress Installation a little bit more Secure but before you do it, back it up 😉
